DragonSword Othello: The Pivot Nobody Ranked

Game version checked: 1.0.10 (19 August 2026 patch). Everything below is drawn from pages already on this site — no new claims about his kit.

Othello occupies an odd position in this site's records: he is named in more tested material than almost any hero here, and ranked in less. One of the two English tier lists we track declined to rate him at all. The team-comp page, meanwhile, gives him a job description precise enough to play from.

He is the second investment in the safest team on this site

Our best team comps guide builds its default boss-learning lineup — Cerese / Othello / Dana — around two ranged heroes and one melee pivot, and Othello is the pivot. The rotation the guide condenses is four steps, and his is step three: come in only for the close-range transition, finish that immediate job, and do not extend the melee exchange past it.

That is an unusually specific instruction for a hero page to inherit, and it carries a build consequence the same guide spells out. Othello gets the second investment in that team, ahead of the second ranged hero, on the reasoning that he handles the riskiest handoff. The third slot only needs enough gear to survive and preserve the rotation. So the gearing order is not a power ranking — it is a risk ranking, and Othello is the one taking the risk.

He stays in the lineup when Dana does not. The Dana-replacement variant swaps Reina in and keeps Cerese and Othello in place, which means this site's records treat him as the fixed part of that team rather than the flexible part.

The Frostbite framing, and where it came from

The same page describes him as the game's premier Frostbite damage dealer, built around detonation windows fed by fast Frost applicators like Cerese and Dana. That single sentence is the closest thing to a role definition any page here gives him: he is not the one applying the condition, he is the one spending it.

Read against the loop our combat guide sets out — apply an ailment, a Signal Skill arms, switching fires it — a detonator is exactly the hero a team should not be short of. Three appliers who nobody answers will never chain. Othello's value in that lineup is that he answers.

The label problem

Our roster page records Othello's applied ailment as "ice", describes him as an ice specialist with an ice grab, and — in the same page's closing section — states that his full kit is not documented in any source we consider reliable. Those two facts sit awkwardly together, and the ailment coverage page inherits the awkwardness: it collapses Ice and Freeze onto one row, giving that row two appliers, Dana under "Freeze" and Othello under "Ice."

The combat guide's list of nine attested ailments names Freeze (Ice) as one state under two words, which supports the collapse. But nothing first-party confirms that Othello's "ice" and Dana's "Freeze" arm the same Signal. Unconfirmed: this site records the two labels separately and collapses them only as a conservative reading, not as a verified equivalence. If you are pairing them specifically so one detonates what the other applies, test it in a fight before you build for it.

Why one ranking skipped him

Our tier list grades him A on Pro Game Guides and not rated on games.gg — one of four heroes (with Sion, Astria and Eileen) whose evaluation that site marked incomplete. The page is explicit that it will not fill those gaps with its own guesses, and this page will not either.

That produces a genuine asymmetry worth naming: the hero with the most detailed tested-rotation writeup on this site has the thinnest ranking coverage. If you were choosing purely by tier table you would never notice him; if you were choosing by what somebody actually played, he is in two of the four lineups this site documents.

The Hero Quest that has not shipped

He is not among the five heroes with a Hero Quest achievement — those are Cerese, Kalien, Ornette, Dana and Theresia, per our achievements page. But our FAQ page records the developer's Stream #4 roadmap (19 June 2026) promising new Hero Quests starting with Othello's, alongside the four free heroes and the Rift system.

As of the 1.0.10 patch on our patch notes page, that quest has not appeared in any released update. No patch through 1.0.10 names an Othello fix or balance change at all — he is one of the few heroes with a completely clean patch record here.

What this page cannot tell you

No gear set, no Karma, no stat priority, no skill names, no Awakening effects. The roster page says his kit is undocumented and we are not going to invent one. What you can price is the unlock: one Fate's Invitation, same as every Exchange hero, which the unlock planner puts in context against the rest of the roster.
