Game version checked: 1.0.10 (19 August 2026 patch). Every claim below traces to another page on this site — no new assertions about her kit.
There are nineteen heroes in DragonSword: Awakening and exactly one of them can produce a Break. Our ailment coverage page puts it in the bluntest terms any page here uses: a Break-triggered Signal is a Castella-shaped hole in your roster — if you have not spent an invitation on her, no other hero in the game gives you that opener.

Break is not like the other eight
The reason her monopoly matters more than Theresia's on Bleed or Ornette's on Shock is that Break is structurally different. Our glossary and combat guide both flag it as the odd one out among the nine attested ailments: it is a super-armor break rather than a damage-over-time or crowd-control state, and — this is the part that compounds — it is itself a Signal trigger. The combat guide states outright that Castella's kit is built on it.
So Break is not a damage tick you layer for value. It is a window. And in a game where our combat guide describes bosses with interruptible animations and the whole loop running on armed Signals, the hero who opens windows is doing something no amount of attack power substitutes for.
The one boss fight with a published counter runs through her ailment
Our bosses page documents seventeen named bosses and exactly one with a real solution written down anywhere citable: Hagen the Dark Necromancer, at a 6.4% global clear rate.
The mechanic, per a Steam guide by the player Cat: Hagen expels a ghost, and when that ghost returns to him he heals. Racing the heal is the trap. The counter is the glowing dummy he leaves behind — hit it until it breaks, and when the ghost flies in Hagen swaps places with the knocked-down dummy and does not heal.
That page then makes the connection this one inherits: the counter is exploiting the Break window rather than out-damaging the heal, and its closing line for anyone building a party for that fight is that the relevant question is which of the nineteen heroes can reliably produce a Break window, not who has the highest damage number. On this site's own records, the answer to that question is a list of one.
Castella is separately named on the same page as a useful pick against Hagen alongside Kalien and Kalsion — though with the attribution attached, because those are reader comments on the guide rather than the author's tested method.
Her second ailment is the most forgiving one on the roster
The roster page records her as an elf and a front-line assault vanguard applying Break and Stun. The coverage table puts Stun at four appliers — Lute, Castella, Theresia and Kalien — the roster's healthiest ailment by a wide margin.
Our unlock planner builds a recommendation on that pairing: if you would rather build around Stun than the Airborne cluster, Castella and Theresia are the Exchange half of a group that already contains Lute, who arrives free with the story and is the only hero in the game with an on-demand heal. The ailment coverage page adds the economic point — a Stun chain is the only one on this roster that costs nothing to start, because one of its four appliers is free.
That makes Castella an unusually low-risk invitation. Her common ailment guarantees she chains with heroes you are likely to own already; her rare one covers a gap nothing else covers.
A control label this site cannot source
One caution, printed rather than smoothed over. Our tier list reproduces a worked team example from games.gg that names "Castella for knockdown control." But the roster records give her Break and Stun, and the ailment coverage page files Knockdown under two appliers who are Lute and Ornette — not Castella.
Unconfirmed: the two records disagree. Either the tier-list source is using "knockdown control" loosely to describe what a Break or Stun does to an enemy's posture, or Castella applies a Knockdown that this site's roster text never recorded. No first-party source settles it, and we are not choosing a side to make the table tidier.
Rankings and the patch record
The two English rankings our tier list tracks both grade her A — no split, no "not rated," no spelling confusion. That puts her in the small group of heroes whose placement is not an argument about playstyle.
She has no Hero Quest achievement; our achievements page confirms only five heroes do. And she appears in no patch entry on our patch notes page through 1.0.10 — no bug fix, no balance change, nothing. On a roster where Dana, Roxy, Eileen, Theresia, Kalsion, Sion, Charlotte, Cerese and Kalien have all been touched, a clean record is at least a weak signal that her kit is working as designed.
What this page cannot tell you
Her gear set, her Karma, her stat priorities, her skill names, her Awakening effects, and how long a Break window actually lasts. The combat guide is explicit that no source publishes build-up thresholds, durations or stack counts for any ailment, Break included. Her unlock is one Fate's Invitation, the flat price the unlock planner applies across the Exchange. For this site's only hero page with a complete sourced loadout, see the Kalsion build guide.
