DragonSword Awakening System: How to Awaken Your Heroes

Game version checked: 1.0.10 (19 August 2026 patch). DragonSword patches frequently — if a newer version is live, cross-check tuning-sensitive numbers in-game.

Every hero in DragonSword: Awakening has six Awakening levels, each unlocked with a Stigma Awakened Stone, and each Stone costs 200 Fragments of Sacred Light exchanged at the relevant vendor. That is the whole mechanic in one sentence — the rest of this page is what those six levels actually change, where Sacred Light comes from, and why our own Gear, Runes and Karma guide hedges on this exact number.

Six levels, confirmed

Our Gear, Runes and Karma page currently describes Awakening as "at least three tiers, reportedly six," because the two player-written Steam guides it draws from disagreed and neither is a primary source. A bylined Destructoid guide (Arka Sarkar, Staff Writer, 24 July 2026) resolves that ambiguity directly: each hero has six different Awakening levels, and Awakening is described as the advanced upgrade track you use to max out a hero after leveling and Breakthroughs are done — it changes a hero's playstyle, strengths and weaknesses rather than just raising stat numbers.

That same source gives a concrete example: Theresia's kit at Awakening level 1 includes "The Mace of Branding," meaning at least some Awakening levels swap or add named skill effects rather than only scaling existing ones. Exactly which levels grant which named effects for which of the 19 heroes is not something either of our sources publishes in full — see the "what we could not confirm" section below.

The cost: Stigma Awakened Stone and Sacred Light

To awaken a hero, you need a Stigma Awakened Stone. You get one Stigma Awakened Stone in exchange for 200 Fragments of Sacred Light. Fragments of Sacred Light come from Sudden Mission completions — the surprise mini-boss fights and timed challenges you run into while exploring rather than a scheduled daily.

A second, independent source — a community wiki's daily-routine guide (dragonswordawakening.wiki, last updated August 2026) — cross-references the same 200-fragment exchange rate and adds a practical note: Sudden Missions share the same daily-reset ecosystem as Regional Missions and World Bosses, so if you are specifically farming Awakening materials, prioritize a Sudden Mission icon the moment it appears on your map rather than saving it for later in the session. That guide also flags that pre-launch review-copy saves may have lost Sudden Mission discovery progress even though achievement progress persisted — worth checking if your Sudden Mission counter looks lower than it should for how long you've played.

Because awakening a hero across all six levels requires a large number of Stones, and each Stone requires 200 fragments, the Destructoid guide's advice is blunt: don't try to fully awaken one hero early. Spread Awakening investment across your actual team instead of maxing a single favorite, and treat full six-level Awakening as a mid-game-and-later goal once Sudden Missions are producing Sacred Light in volume.

How Awakening fits with the other three upgrade tracks

DragonSword: Awakening hands you four separate hero upgrade systems at once — Level/Breakthrough, Runes, Karma, and Awakening — and our beginner guide already flags that the game introduces all four in a single breath without explaining any of them well. Awakening is the track that changes a hero's kit; Karma changes what their signature weapon does; Runes and gear stats scale raw numbers. For anyone deciding where to spend limited early materials, the practical order most sources agree on is: get a hero to their level cap and first Breakthrough before investing in Awakening, since Awakening levels are described as a mid-to-late investment rather than a day-one priority.

For the mechanics of Karma specifically — General Karma from Fragment of Memory versus Exclusive Karma locked to specific heroes — see our dedicated Gear, Runes and Karma guide, which sources this from Destructoid's rune explainer and two additional player guides.

Where Sacred Light fits into your daily routine

If Awakening is your current bottleneck — meaning you have Stigma Awakened Stones sitting unspent because you lack fragments, or the reverse — the daily-routine wiki source above recommends a "bottleneck-first" approach: identify what's actually blocking your next power spike (Skill Scrolls, Forging Molds, Karma duplicates, or Sacred Light) and run only the daily content that feeds that specific resource, rather than clearing every daily activity evenly. Spreading effort evenly across Regional Missions, World Bosses and Tower of Trials "feels productive but slows power spikes," in that source's words.

For where World Bosses and the weekly Raid claim system fit into that same daily-and-weekly loop, see our World Boss and Raid Guide.

Two tutorials to watch

Destructoid's own guide is text-only, but a Steam Community discussion thread on hero upgrade priority is a useful second read if you want player consensus rather than a single outlet's framing — see the DragonSword: Awakening general discussions hub on Steam for the most current threads, since individual discussion links on Steam rotate as new questions get asked. For a video walkthrough of the Karma and Awakening menus specifically, GAMES.GG's "How to Upgrade Your Heroes" guide covers the same four systems with menu screenshots, which is useful if Destructoid's text description of "where" to find these menus isn't enough on its own — see GAMES.GG's hero upgrade guide.

What we could not confirm

Neither of our two sources lists what each of the six Awakening levels does for each of the 19 heroes individually — only that level 1 changes something (Theresia's example above) and that all six together are described as expensive enough to warrant spreading investment across a team. We also could not confirm whether the Stigma Awakened Stone exchange rate or the 200-fragment cost changed in any patch after the 24 July 2026 date of our primary source; our own patch notes and roadmap page does not list an Awakening-specific balance change through patch 1.0.10, so treat the numbers above as current as of that patch and re-check after any newer update.
