Game version checked: 1.0.12 (10 September 2026 patch). Built from Hound13's Steam announcements and patch notes, the community wiki, and Steam's public achievement statistics — named inline.
Johnny's name is on the crew, on a faction, and on the premise of the game. It is not on a hero trailer, a balance note, or a kit description. This is the most narratively central hero in DragonSword with the least published about how he plays, and this page is honest about that ratio.

He is the reason the story starts
Steam's own store description puts him in the second sentence of the premise: Lute "finds himself swept up in the lives of Johnny, a mercenary, and Castella, an Elf, stumbling headfirst into the chaotic life of a mercenary."
Hound13's May 2026 AMA lists the game's structure around him too — "There are 5 factions at official launch: the Johnny Mercenaries, Red Fox Mercenaries, Organa Order, Orbis Kingdom, and Lentus Rebellion Army." One of five factions is named after him, and the community wiki gives its roster as Lute, Johnny, Castella and Aria — the exact three-plus-one cast Hound13 used for its own tag combo demonstration.
Our roster page records the consequence for unlocking: Johnny is the clearest story hero on the list, joining as the campaign progresses and never appearing in the Exchange at all. The unlock planner never has to price him, because he has no price.
The one skill Hound13 has named
Patch 1.0.10 (20 August 2026), in the list of skills whose camera rotation sensitivity was removed:
Removed camera rotation sensitivity changes when using specific hero skills […] Johnny [Fatal Sting]
[Fatal Sting] is, as of 1.0.12, the only Johnny skill name in any primary source. He shares that list with Alex's [Defensive Stance] and [Dodge Combo], Aria's [Air Bomb], Astria's [Ballista Shot], Castella's [Howling], Dana's [Snow Step], Ornette's [Holy Cross] and Tarte's [Lightning Shock]. The common thread across that list is skills with a committed animation — the camera was being manipulated during them, and that manipulation is gone.
The name itself suggests a thrust or a finisher rather than a sweep, but not confirmed: nothing describes what it does. Our roster page is explicit that "Johnny's weapon" is among the things no reliable source documents, and that has not changed.
The achievement that hints at his durability
The community wiki's Special achievement table gives the condition for Heh, Perfect Landing!:
Jump from a high place as Johnny, take damage equal to 90% or more of your maximum HP, and survive.
Steam's global statistics, captured 7 September 2026, put it at 3.2% — among the ten rarest of the sixty on our achievements page.
This is a hero-locked achievement, which is worth pausing on. The roster has exactly four of them: Lute's [Swordgrab] multi-kill (3.0%), Roxy's ten consecutive Air Stomps (3.3%), Reina's thirty seconds of airborne attacking (5.2%), and this one. Three of the four are about air control. Johnny's is about landing — surviving a fall that takes 90% of your bar.
It does not prove he has a defensive kit, but it does tell you Hound13 built a challenge around him specifically taking a huge hit and living. Given that this game has no natural HP regeneration outside Goddess Statues, as our beginner guide explains, the achievement is best attempted at full HP with a healer parked behind you — which in practice means Lute.
The 1.0.9 unlock you may have missed
Patch 1.0.9 (13 August 2026):
Lute, Johnny, and Kalien are now unlocked up to their sixth Awakening.
Three heroes — and notably the three most likely to be in an early party — were capped below the system's ceiling for the first three weeks after launch. The Awakening system guide covers the six-step structure. If you invested in Johnny in late July and his progression stopped, that was a shipped cap, not a wall you misread.
The only other patch line bearing his name is cosmetic: 1.0.4 (30 July) fixed Adventure Quest 59, Tomb of Greed, where "Johnny's icon was displayed as Lute's icon when using cooking."
A naming note
Three sources spell his faction three ways. Hound13's AMA says "the Johnny Mercenaries." The community wiki titles the page "Johnny's Mercenaries." The 30 April 2026 Lute gameplay preview calls it "Johnny Mercenary." They are the same faction. We use Hound13's AMA wording where a choice is needed, and flag the variance rather than pretending it does not exist — it matters if you are searching for information about him.
What this page cannot tell you
His weapon, his status ailment, his Karma trait, his Awakening effects, his Signal Skill names, his second Active Skill, and whether he has a Hero Quest. Steam's achievement list has five Hero Quest completions on it and none of them is his. He has never been named in a balance pass through 1.0.12, which in this game usually means a hero Hound13's usage data has not flagged — but that is an inference, and it is the only one available.
