DragonSword Lute Guide: The Hero You Never Bench

Game version checked: 1.0.12 (10 September 2026 patch). Built from Hound13's own announcements, one player-authored Steam guide, and Steam's public achievement statistics. External sources are named inline.

Every other hero on this roster is a decision. Lute is the floor. He is the hero the game hands you, the hero every other player also has, and — per Hound13's own launch material — the only one carrying a heal you can press on demand.

What Hound13 actually said about him

The clearest statement of his kit predates launch. In the Gameplay Preview - [Lute] announcement of 30 April 2026, Hound13 wrote that Lute "wields a greatsword to inflict Stun and Knockdown status effects, while also boasting a versatile combat style equipped with healing abilities," and introduced him as "the youngest member of Johnny Mercenary."

That is the whole official kit description, and it has not been expanded since. The Steam store page adds the frame rather than the mechanics: Lute is "a young boy traveling toward Orbis" who is swept up in the lives of Johnny and Castella. Everything below is patch notes and measurement.

The day after that preview, the Tag Combo Preview post described the intended relay in one sentence: "Assault vanguard Castella shakes the front line with Break and Stun, Lute follows up with Stun and Knockdown," and then Aria "stacks Fire and Airborne status effects with her bombs, then hands the offensive opportunity back to Castella." That is Hound13 showing the Signal chain the combat guide describes in the abstract — three heroes, four ailments, no dead link in the chain.

The 1.0.11 change that matters

Patch 1.0.11 (3 September 2026) lists exactly one Lute line in its Balance section:

Learning [A Young Boy's Choice] (Master Skill) now applies Stun value to all [Dropkick] attacks.

Two things fall out of that. First, those are his Master Skill and one of his named skills — the only two Lute skill names Hound13 has ever printed. Second, if you have that Master Skill, Dropkick became a Stun applier across the whole string rather than on one hit, which makes his contribution to the roster's most crowded ailment (four appliers, per the ailment coverage page) considerably more reliable.

Patch 1.0.9 (13 August) is the other one to know: "Lute, Johnny, and Kalien are now unlocked up to their sixth Awakening." Three heroes were capped below the system's ceiling for the first three weeks after launch. If you levelled Lute early and hit a wall, that was it, and it is fixed.

Somebody measured his numbers

Hound13 has never published skill percentages. A player-written Steam guide, Damage 101, did, and used Lute as the test subject for a stated reason: "I chose him because everybody has him and can check my work."

The author's method was to record a fight against a world boss and convert raw damage back into skill percentages. His figures, at Skill Lv.1 (basic attack at Lv.2, by his own admission a misclick):

StringMeasured skill %
Basic40.6 / 61.0 / 81.4 / 81.4 / 142
Dropkick75.4 / 113.0 / 353.6
Dodge Combo102.9 / 308.6
Skill 154.4 / 136.0 / 353.6
Skill 2115.5 ×2
Signal 1565.6 / 475.1
Signal Pummel1414.2

This is one player's measurement, not a Hound13 figure. Treat it that way. His own headline finding is the interesting part: the numbers the game displays do not match what it does. He records that Lute's skill description lists 666% where his measurement returns 1414.2% on a grappled boss, and concludes that "the displayed Skill% are unreliable," with basic attacks generally being the exception. He also reports that there is no level scaling on damage, which is why under-levelled solo play works at all.

Not confirmed: whether the mismatch is a description bug, a hidden multiplier for grabs, or a measurement error. Hound13 has not commented.

The achievement almost nobody has

The Fandom wiki's Special achievement table gives the condition for The One Who Roots Out the Source of Harm: defeat five enemies simultaneously with Lute's [Swordgrab]. Steam's global statistics, captured 7 September 2026, put it at 3.0% — one of the five rarest on the list per our achievements page.

Swordgrab is a third skill name, and the only evidence we have that his greatsword has a grab at all. It also lines up with the Damage 101 note that the Signal numbers above were taken "when you grapple."

What this page cannot tell you

His Karma trait, his gear set, what each of the six Awakening levels changes, and the name or effect of his second Signal. The Awakening system guide is explicit that per-hero Awakening effects are published for one hero only, and it is not Lute. Hound13's June roadmap recap adds that "the untold story of Lute and the kingdom will be provided through future updates, though the format is still undecided" — so his own narrative is incomplete by design.

He costs nothing. He is a story hero, not an Exchange purchase, which is why the unlock planner never has to price him. The practical read: he is the heal, he is half your Stun coverage, and until you own a second healer — which currently does not exist — benching him is a choice you make on purpose.
