DragonSword Kalien: The Answer to Undead Walls

Game version checked: 1.0.10 (19 August 2026 patch). Built entirely from pages already on this site — no new claims about his kit.

Most heroes on this roster are a preference. Kalien is a key. He is the hero this site's own pages name, repeatedly and independently, as the answer to the one failure state that no amount of gear fixes: an enemy that takes no damage at all.

The wall he opens

Our combat guide records that some enemies are outright immune until struck with the correct element, with Soulwarden Zemoor as the standard example — and that the game signposts it with a note on a nearby staircase stating he is weak to shock and burn. Ornette covers the shock half. Kalien is named there as the community's standard pick against undead generally.

That is not a single mention. Our unlock planner singles him out as one of two heroes deserving specific attention, on exactly this basis: he answers undead and anything gating damage behind burn or shock. Our team archetypes comparison reaches the same conclusion from the archetype side, listing Shock and Burn as the only two elements this site confirms actually bypass an immunity, and calling Kalien out by name within the Burn group. Three pages, three different framings, one recommendation.

This is the rarest kind of hero recommendation to make honestly: not "he does more damage," but "without him or an equivalent, a specific fight does not progress."

Two ailments, two different kinds of value

The roster page records Burn and Stun for him, plus Sur, a fire fox spirit he commands. Those two ailments sit at opposite ends of this roster's scarcity curve, per the ailment coverage page.

Burn is thin. That page's collapsed table gives the Burn / Fire row two heroes — Kalien under "Burn," Aria under "Fire" — and flags that the two labels may not be the same state. Unconfirmed: whether Aria's Fire and Kalien's Burn arm the same Signal. If they are distinct, Kalien is the sole applier of Burn on the shipped roster.

Stun is the opposite: four appliers, the most crowded ailment in the game, shared with Lute, Castella and Theresia. So Kalien slots into the roster's most forgiving chain while also carrying its scarcest element access. That combination is why he reads as a safe invitation rather than a specialist gamble.

Where his Burn team stands

Our team archetypes comparison grades Burn as the best-documented of the six archetypes, and Kalien is one of its three named members alongside Kalsion and Aria. That build page describes the pairing from Kalsion's side: Kalsion + Kalien stacks two Burn-focused heroes for faster Burn application, at the cost of redundancy if your third slot does not add a different Status Ailment. Read from Kalien's side, the warning is the more useful half — pairing him with Kalsion doubles down on an element you already have covered, so the third slot is where your team's breadth has to come from.

One caveat this site keeps attached to a related tip: our bosses page records Kalien named as a useful pick against Hagen the Dark Necromancer alongside Kalsion and Castella, but as reader comments on a guide rather than the author's tested method — softer evidence than the Break-window mechanic that page documents directly.

What the rankings and the achievement data say

Our tier list is one of the few places on this roster where the two tracked English rankings simply agree: A on Pro Game Guides, A on games.gg. No split, no spelling confusion, no "not rated." On a table where Reina swings from B to S and Cerese from S to B, an uncontested grade is information in itself — it usually means a hero whose kit does one legible thing, which matches everything above.

He is one of five heroes with a Hero Quest achievement on our achievements page — A Tale Carried on the Embers, at a 9.4% global unlock rate, the second-highest of the five. He also appears in the 1.0.9 (13 August) fix list on our patch notes page, among unenumerated Charlotte/Cerese/Roxy/Kalien bugs. No patch through 1.0.10 records a Kalien balance change.

What this page cannot tell you

His gear set, his Karma, his stat priorities, his skill names, what Sur actually does mechanically, and which Awakening level changes what. None of it is documented on any page of this site, and the Awakening system guide is explicit that per-hero Awakening effects are published for exactly one hero, and it is not Kalien.

His unlock costs one Fate's Invitation, the same flat price the unlock planner applies across the Exchange. That page's own verdict is worth repeating here: since price carries no information in this game, the only sensible ranking is by what your team needs — and if your team is stuck on an element gate, this is the need.
