Familiars are DragonSword's mounts, and the reason they need a page of their own is not that there are a lot of them. It is that completing a type grants a movement ability at the account level, and every type has paid members. That makes them a progression system with a purchase decision sitting inside it, which is a different thing from a cosmetic store.
Twenty-nine, and who counted them
Two signed articles published two days apart agree on the total. Pro Game Guides (Sudhanyo Chatterjee, 26 July 2026) prints a summary line reading "Total Familiars: 29 / DLC-Exclusive Familiars: 15 / Category Count: 8 types." GameRant (Nahda Nabiilah, 28 July 2026) states independently that "There are 29 Familiars in Dragonsword Awakening."
Two outlets arriving at 29 separately is about as good as this gets. Hound13 has never published a count itself, as far as we can find as of 12 August 2026.
The number that does not survive scrutiny is 15. Pro Game Guides' summary says 15 are DLC-exclusive, but its own table marks twelve paid entries — eleven "DLC Exclusive" plus Brave Baby Dragon, "Deluxe Pack Exclusive". We print both rather than picking one. If you are budgeting, assume twelve to fifteen.

What completing a type actually gives you
Pro Game Guides describes type sets as account-wide movement unlocks and gives one concrete threshold: "unlocking 2 Sky Wolf Familiars enables the Underwater Dash passive." Note that this is two of the four, not all four.
GameRant describes the same system in wider terms, naming Climbing Jump, Swim Dash and Air Dash among the abilities and quantifying the payoff as stamina reduction (20%) and movement speed increases (10%). Those two percentages appear in GameRant only and are not independently confirmed — treat them as one outlet's reporting, not a spec sheet.
Which type grants which verb, beyond Sky Wolf and Underwater Dash, is not stated anywhere reliable, and we are not guessing at the other seven.
Two things follow from the table below, if both it and the two-familiar threshold are right:
- The Sky Wolf threshold is reachable without spending money. Two of its four members (Snowstorm, Sandstorm) are in-game unlocks.
- The Dragon type has exactly one listed member, and it is Deluxe Pack exclusive. Whatever a completed Dragon set does, it is not available to base-game owners.
The unlock table, as one source published it
Everything here comes from the Pro Game Guides article of 26 July 2026. Single source; we have not verified any line in-game. The third column is their wording.

| Exploration Squad Griffon | Gryphon | DLC Exclusive |
| Holy Knightage Griffon | Gryphon | DLC Exclusive |
| Brave Baby Dragon | Dragon | Deluxe Pack Exclusive |
Seven types hold four familiars each; Dragon holds one. That accounts for all 29.
Five of them are Mercenary Corps rank rewards
Read the table by unlock method rather than by type and a ladder falls out of it: Novice → Intermediate → Advanced → Veteran → Elite, one familiar per rank — Bright Crowtit, Marple Flying Squirrel, Dawn Wing Cat, Stormy Direwolf and Knightage Griffon in that order.
The ladder itself is new information — our own beginner guide refers to Mercenary Corps promotions without naming the ranks. Five familiars come as a side effect of progression you were doing anyway.
The grind targets behind the rest
The remaining in-game unlocks are activity counters, and they are large: 300 mining actions, 300 treasure chests, 150 bird eggs, 100 squirrels, 100 equipment crafts, 40 environmental puzzles, 20 mini-games, 30 World Boss kills, 300,000 gold, 100 Adventure's Emblems.
Two notes on those.
"40 environmental puzzles" is not the same thing as the 29 sliding-pillar puzzles counted by a separate player guide. Different scopes, different sources; do not treat 29 as progress toward 40.
The 30 World Boss kills overlap with a farm you may already be doing. World Bosses are also the reported source of duplicate Basic Karma, and patch 1.0.4 raised their rewards. If you are running them for Karma, Guardian Gryphon accrues in the background.
How much of this is behind DLC, and the claim that it is cosmetic
Before launch, Simulation Daily (19 June 2026) reported the familiar DLC as "cosmetic only, no gameplay impact." After launch, the two lists above describe type sets granting movement speed and stamina reduction, with paid members in every type.
Those are hard to hold at once unless "no gameplay impact" means "no combat power". That reading is defensible — none of this is a damage advantage — but it is not what most players mean by cosmetic, and our requirements page already flags it as the most-cited complaint in the game's negative reviews.
On the size of the store: Steam's own app details returned 19 DLC packages as of 12 August 2026, while our earlier count on the store page was 20. Both can be right on different days as items are added, so treat it as "about twenty" and check the store page yourself before quoting a figure.
Two claims we could not reconcile
Snowstorm Sky Wolf. Pro Game Guides says "Complete The Captain's Scheme quest." GameRant ties it to story completion at Chapter 9. We cannot pick, and there is a complication: Into Indie Games' chaptered walkthrough hub (23 July 2026) runs Prologue plus Chapters 1 to 8, with no Chapter 9 — so the second claim rests on a chapter we cannot confirm exists.
The menu path. Hound13's own FAQ describes familiars as obtained via Main Menu → Codex → Familiar; GameRant describes opening the main menu and choosing Familiar directly. We prefer the developer's wording, with one caveat: we read that FAQ through Steam's news feed rather than capturing the announcement page verbatim, so the exact phrasing is second-hand.
Two patches that changed how riding feels
1.0.7 (6 August 2026) added a setting to dismount with the attack button, and made familiars and characters keep their dash state through jumps and falls. The second one matters more than it sounds: it removes a speed reset every time terrain interrupts you.
1.0.4 (30 July 2026) fixed Abyssal Direwolf re-mounting fall damage — remounting that familiar was hurting you.
If your bottleneck is traversal stamina rather than mount availability, the other lever is food — see cooking.
Where this page stops
We have no per-familiar speed values, no list of which movement ability each type grants (only Sky Wolf → Underwater Dash is stated anywhere), no thresholds other than "2 Sky Wolf", and no documentation of individual mount passives — despite that, and which mounts can climb where, being what players ask about most. Both have live Steam threads with about a dozen replies each as of 12 August 2026 and no answer in either. We are also not printing per-familiar DLC prices, because the pack structure changes and a stale price is worse than none.
What is sourced above is the count, the type breakdown, the unlock table with its single-source warning, the rank ladder, the two patch changes and the two contradictions. The auto-generated wikis will hand you a tidier version with none of those caveats. They will not tell you where the 20% came from.
