Valheim Sailing & Ore Hauling Guide
Scope: Vanilla standard survival; world modifiers, mods and later patches can change the rules
Language: English中文
Key points
- The Karve takes 30 Fine wood, 10 Deer hide, 20 Resin and 80 Bronze nails — note that Bronze nails are not Bronze.
- Sailing is affected by wind: in a headwind change the route, reduce sail or row rather than pointing straight at the target.
- Landing matters more than sighting land — run the coast, pick a spot with room to get off, set up a way back, then unload.
- Gather ore at one staging point and make a single dedicated haul; after a wreck, secure your own stamina first, then salvage.

The thing worth checking before a long voyage is not how far the destination is, but whether you have a next step if something goes wrong halfway. Learn steering, mooring and coming ashore on short routes before you bet a full hold of key materials on one expedition. A raft is useful for understanding the controls, but it is not the backbone of an ore-hauling plan.
Preparing your first real ship
The Karve's recipe is 30 Fine wood, 10 Deer hide, 20 Resin and 80 Bronze nails — see Karve. While you gather, note the difference between "Bronze nails" and "Bronze", and do not read the recipe numbers as bars of metal.

Repair the ship before you launch, bring plenty of food, and carry materials that let you set up a way back. The cargo hold is for hauling, but your own inventory needs space for whatever goes wrong. Do not squeeze out food and tools to fit one more stack of loot.
In a headwind, change the route first
Sailing is affected by wind direction, and a sailing ship is not always fastest heading straight at the target. Watch the wind and the coastline, and when you need to, reduce sail, switch to rowing or go around the obstacle. Steering basics are covered under Boats.
In a narrow channel you do not need to hold top speed. Slowing down early is easier to handle than reversing off a shore you just hit. Slow down in poor visibility too: shallows and rocks that never made it onto your map do not disappear because you are moving fast.
Landing matters more than sighting land
The first time you reach an unfamiliar biome, run the coast and look; do not charge at the first strip of sand you see. Pick a spot with room to get off the boat, room to set up a way back, and room to retreat from trouble. A low-risk biome next door to a dangerous one sometimes makes the better staging point.

Once ashore, clear the area, place a portal and test the trip home before you unload anything valuable. On a group expedition, assign a helmsman and a scout so everyone does not pile off at once while the ship sits somewhere exposed.
Making ore runs succeed more often
Gather the ore at one safe staging point first, then make one dedicated haul. Before you leave, check the ship's condition, your food and the unloading space at the other end. Mark any new high-risk landmark you spot on the way, but do not turn a loaded run into a fight for the sake of a detour.
On a route you already know well, put the effort into the docks and loading paths at both ends. Hauling speed is not only about how fast the ship is; carrying crates up and down a slope repeatedly eats a lot of time.
When the ship goes down
First make sure your character does not drown from spent stamina, then think about salvage. After a wreck, different items recover under different conditions, and some shipbuilding materials sink into deep water and cannot all be guaranteed back. Note the location and come back with the right rescue setup rather than diving in empty-handed again and again.
The Ashlands have their own sailing requirements and cannot be approached with ordinary voyage prep, so read that biome's guide before you set out. Splitting every voyage into "can leave, can land, can get home" is more reliable than staring at the final coordinates.
