Valheim Progression Order by Biome

Scope: Vanilla standard survival; world modifiers, mods and later patches can change the rules

Language: English中文

Key points

  • The first-playthrough order is Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands, Deep North.
  • Being allowed to explore ahead is not the same as being able to live there — each stage opens resources and crafting conditions, not a quest arrow.
  • Before changing biome, answer three questions: can I supply this stage's food, do I have backup gear, can I get key materials home?
  • You are ready for the next boss when ordinary enemies stop forcing potions, you keep stamina after a full combo, and you can organise a second attempt.

Valheim's main route is not a quest arrow. It is opening up new resources and crafting conditions, one stage at a time. For a first playthrough the easiest order is Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands, and finally the Deep North. Being allowed to explore ahead is not the same as being able to live there. The biome and unlock relationships are indexed in the community progression guide.

Early: build the ability to go out again

In the Meadows the goal is not a castle. It is a bed, a fire, food and a Workbench that repairs your tools. Beat Eikthyr and you move into the mining stage; the Black Forest is where ore, fuel, smelting and forging finally connect. The first time resources feel short here, it is usually because you are building too many pieces of gear at once. Finish your tools and one main weapon before you think about a full armour set and progress reads much more clearly.

Mid: turn one win into steady supply

The Swamp stage revolves around iron and poison resistance. The Mountains mean solving cold, locating silver and hauling down a slope. The Plains bring farming and new processing gear into your base. Ask three questions before each biome change: can I keep this stage's food supplied, do I have backup gear if I die, and can I get the key materials home safely? If one of those has no answer, fix that instead of hunting for the next boss.

Late: what to check in Mistlands, Ashlands and Deep North

The Mistlands start with visibility, dungeon exploration and new workstations. The Ashlands start with the voyage and a foothold after landing. The new Deep North chain involves moulds, processing, keys and an invasion event, so do not read it as "mine one new ore, make one new armour set". The full order is in the Deep North progression guide.

Late biomes: sort each trip into scouting, gathering or assault · Official screenshot · Iron Gate Studio (Steam store page)

In late biomes, sort each trip into scouting, gathering or assault. Scouting only marks entrances and exits. Gathering only brings back the target material. Assault is the one that carries combat supplies. Doing all three in one outing usually means fighting unfamiliar enemies with a full pack.

How to tell you can take on the next boss

You do not need every item at the current cap. A more useful check: ordinary enemies no longer force you to chug potions; you still have stamina to leave after a full attack sequence; you know how the target is summoned; there is a reliable way home near the arena; and if you lose, you can organise a second attempt.

If you are stuck, find the specific bottleneck. Dying to poison means resistance. Never getting home means transport. Running out of stamina halfway means food and attack habits. Replacing "maybe my gear is bad" with a problem you can actually solve beats grinding materials aimlessly.

Using this route solo or in a group

Solo suits small steps: one upgrade finished each time you get home. A group can mine, farm and scout in parallel, but first attempts, key drops and workstation builds are best coordinated. Do not leave a new teammate chasing the party two stages behind in gear. A party's real progress is everyone being able to get from base to the current frontier on their own, not one player having killed the boss.
