Valheim Food Guide: Three Food Slots

Scope: Vanilla standard survival; world modifiers, mods and later patches can change the rules

Language: English中文

Key points

  • You can hold three different food effects at once, and each food gives different health, stamina and Eitr.
  • Pick by what is most likely to end this trip badly: melee usually starts from two health-leaning foods and one stamina-leaning one.
  • Eitr gear needs Eitr food, which costs you health and stamina slots — check protection and mobility before you commit.
  • Supply beats the perfect combo: a meal that needs a long trip every time is assault-only supply, not your main menu.

No single food set fits every activity. Mining, long exploration, a first boss attempt and using a staff all drain different resources. The right way to pick is to decide what is most likely to end this trip badly, then cover that with food. The game lets you hold three different food effects at once, and each food gives different health, stamina and Eitr, as listed on the Food page.

Melee: buy yourself margin first, then an escape

If you are a normal melee player who does not know the enemies yet, start from two health-leaning foods and one stamina-leaning one. That is a conservative starting point, not a required recipe. If you dodge everything but run dry between chasing, blocking and rolling, shift towards stamina. If you keep taking hits back to back, do not trade away your margin for one extra swing.

Judge a combination not by how the full bar looks on the menu, but by whether you can still handle a second enemy after one real fight.

Exploring and building should not eat your scarcest combat meals

Working near a base you already hold is fine on food you can resupply easily. Unknown territory is different: do not prepare as if you will only run and never fight, because a detour, a forced climb or rescuing a teammate all turn exploration into combat. Keep one emergency meal, and recheck your remaining duration before you enter a dangerous area.

Splitting the kitchen's output into everyday, expedition and boss groups works well in practice. Everyday meals keep coming; expedition meals live at your travel hubs; boss meals are saved for a planned assault. That alone removes most of the frantic chest-digging at departure.

Magic builds cannot copy a pure melee menu

Gear that needs Eitr has to be paired with the food for it. Once you commit slots to Eitr, there is less room for health and stamina, so check your protection and mobility too. Do not just count how many casts you get: one dodge you fail to make can waste the rest of it. On your first switch to magic, run a fight and a recovery cycle somewhere familiar before you take it into a new dungeon.

Supply matters more than occasionally hitting the best combo

If a meal means a long trip every time you make it, treat it as assault-only supply for now. Your main menu should map onto hunting, farming and processing you can keep running. Preparing for ten ordinary trips moves a save forward more than preparing one luxury menu.

When you cannot find a recipe, check whether you have ever had the ingredient, the station and the upgrade conditions, rather than assuming the game is broken. This guide does not force late recipes into an early menu, so you will not read a name you have no way to cook yet.

Three checks before you leave

Confirm none of the three slots is empty; confirm the current effects have not decayed to the point where the trip is a bad idea; confirm the spare meals in your pack cover the route you planned. If you keep going fragile late in fights, check your food before you decide you need better gear.

The starting points are conservative defaults, not required recipes; shift towards stamina or health based on what actually goes wrong.
