Bongo Cat Steam Error: Fixes and Hotkeys Guide
Scope: Fixes the developer has published; Windows unless noted
Key points
- The Steam Error popup means a Steam API call failed, not that your item is gone; the developer says drops and exchanges still went through during the February–March 2026 errors.
- Check Steam → Inventory → Inventory History to see whether the drop or exchange actually happened.
- If the chest timer loops, restart Steam, start the app and wait 30 minutes without opening a chest.
- F1 resets position and scale, F3 fixes a black background, F4 leaves gaming mode, F8 moves the cat to another screen.

A Steam Error popup in Bongo Cat means a Steam API call failed. In the February–March 2026 episode, the developer said the item drop or exchange still went through anyway. Close the popup, open your Steam inventory history to confirm, and if the chest timer keeps looping, restart Steam and leave the app running for 30 minutes.
What does the Steam Error popup actually mean?
Items in Bongo Cat live in your Steam inventory, so every chest and every exchange is a request to Steam. When that request fails, the game shows the popup. In a Steam discussions post from February 2026 the developer explained that the Steam API was returning a lot of failed results, "But the items still drop/exchanges still go through", and that the popup is simply the game reporting that a Steam API call failed (developer's Steam Error post).
The same post was later edited to say Valve was working on it and that promotional items, such as achievement rewards, now check their drop condition less often to reduce server load.
How do you check whether your drop went through?
- Close the popup instead of retrying the chest over and over.
- In the Steam client, open your profile's Inventory.
- Choose Inventory History and look for Bongo Cat entries with the time of your chest or exchange.
- If the item is listed, the drop or exchange went through, whatever the popup said.
If nothing is listed and the timer is stuck, move on to the resync steps below. When a May 2025 exchange bug traded away non-duplicates, the developer asked affected players to send their Steam profile via Discord ("spiced pigeon" in that post, written spicedpigeon in an October 2025 post) or contact@irox-games.com; those are the contact channels the developer has published.
What fixed Steam Error in past updates?
The error has had different causes over time. These are the ones the developer has named:
| Date | Cause named by the developer | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| May 8, 2025 | Items could not stack | Emergency fix: "items can now stack"; keep the app running for 30 minutes until it works normally |
| Oct 2, 2025 | Steam server issues during the emoji update | Valve fixed something in their backend |
| Feb–Mar 2026 | Steam API returning failed results, probably under heavy load (the developer's guess) | Popup can be ignored; Valve contacted; promo items check less often |
| Any time | Game timer out of sync with Steam's | Restart Steam, start the app, wait 30 minutes without opening a chest |
The last row comes from a developer reply: restart Steam, start Bongo Cat and "wait 30min without opening a chest", because the problem "happens if the timer desyncs between steam and the game" (reply). An older version of the same problem showed up as a red cross, which a March 2025 patch addressed.

Which hotkeys fix display problems?
Most "it vanished" or "it looks wrong" reports have a one-key fix. These come from the developer's pinned FAQ and patch notes; focus the cat first by clicking it or using Alt+Tab.
| Problem | Key | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cat or menu moved off screen, scale too big | F1 (resets position and scale) | FAQ |
| Want to hide the tap counter | F2 | FAQ |
| Black box instead of a transparent background | F3, or enable Transparency Fix in settings | August 2025 fix |
| Stuck in gaming mode | F4 | FAQ |
| Cat invisible or on the wrong monitor | F8 right after launch, before clicking anything | August 2025 fix |
| Clean screenshot of your cat | F12 (picture mode) | March 2025 update |
| Flip or rotate the cat | F / R | 2025 and March 2026 updates |
What if your taps are not being counted?
- On macOS, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring and allow both Steam and Bongo Cat, as the developer's Mac thread explains.
- In some Windows games clicks only register with the opt-in admin mode, described in how to play.
- With a controller, enable controller support in settings; if it still fails, disable Steam Input for the app from its Properties → Controller page (controller thread).
To switch admin mode off again, the developer's instructions are: right-click the game in Steam, Manage → Browse local files, right-click BongoCat.exe → Properties → Compatibility, untick "Run as administrator" and apply.
Worried about why a tapping app needs admin rights at all? That is covered in is Bongo Cat safe. Lobby-specific glitches, like friends' cats not appearing, are in the multiplayer guide.
