How to Play Bongo Cat: Taps, Chests and Drops

Install Bongo Cat free from Steam and leave it running. Every key press or mouse click becomes a tap, and taps pay for chests that drop hats and skins. In 2025 the developer set the chest timer to 30 minutes and said opening a chest needs 1,000 taps, so normal typing keeps you supplied. Keep duplicates for the exchange.
What do you need before you start?
Bongo Cat is free on Steam. It is small, and it sits on top of whatever you are doing rather than taking over the screen. The store page lists these requirements and platforms:

The macOS build was introduced as experimental in the March 2026 update. For Linux, the developer's pinned thread gives the Steam beta code linuxtesting and says it only works on X11 for now (Linux testing thread). Mac users whose taps do not register need to allow Input Monitoring; that fix is on the Steam Error and fixes page.
How do taps turn into chests?
Two things gate a chest: time and taps. In the pre-launch Next Fest demo update, the developer raised the drop timer to 30 minutes. A March 2025 patch changed the chest popup so it "only shows chest popup if you have 1000 clicks" (patch notes), and opening a chest subtracts those taps from your counter.
If 1,000 taps in half an hour sounds like a lot, the developer thinks it is doable. Asked about auto clickers, they replied that "typing 1000 letters in 30min should be possible" and there is "no need for clickers" (reply in the Steam discussions). If you type for work or study, that pace is within reach without any tools.
Two details from March 2025 patches are worth knowing: restarting the game saves your chest cooldown, and resetting your tap counter in settings does not reset achievements. The timing figures above come from 2025 notes; later updates have not announced a change, but check the in-game timer if it looks different.
What should you do with your first drops?
Your first dozen drops will almost all be Common, because the store page puts Common at 90% of the pool. Do not delete them. Duplicates are the fuel for the exchange: ten items of the same rarity trade up into one item of the next tier. Mark the items you actually like with the star in the corner of the item card. Favourites are skipped by the auto exchange, so you will not trade away the hat you are wearing. There is also a setting to auto-equip new drops if you just want to see each new look straight away.
Which settings are worth changing on day one?

Gaming mode can leave the cat unresponsive. If you get stuck, focus the app and press F4, as covered on the fixes page.
Where do rarer items come from?
Chests alone are slow for anything above Uncommon. Limited events add 20 exclusive items for a few weeks each, and since September 2026 the free Paw Pass track pays out themed cosmetics and chests as you reach tap milestones, without spending taps (Paw Pass announcement).
