Bongo Cat Free Items: Hats, Skins and Codes Checked

Bongo Cat is free on Steam, and the developer's announcements name ways to earn hats and skins without paying: chest drops, the exchange, the free Paw Pass lane, multiplayer sets and tap milestones. As of October 9, 2026 we found no redeem-code system in 63 Steam announcements or the store description, so any code list is not confirmed.

Which free Bongo Cat items can you earn by playing?

The game itself costs nothing: the Steam app details API returned is_free: true on October 9, 2026. Which systems it runs on is covered on the Mac, Linux and Steam Deck page. The sources below are ones the developer's announcements describe. For the first six rows we did not find a later announcement in the feed that ends them; the status of the last row is not confirmed.

The Discord and Follow row is not earned by playing, and the June 27, 2026 post on incentivized rewards (further down) does not say whether it was affected. The first two rows are the core loop, and the timer, tap cost and settings behind them are in how to play. Chests mostly pay out Commons; how many chests the higher tiers take is worked out on the Legendary odds page. The Meowtiplayer post adds that the fruit sets "can only be obtained by playing multiplayer, and you can only drop one of the item sets"; lobbies are covered in the multiplayer guide. Whether automated taps count toward the tap rows is not confirmed; the auto clicker page lists what the announcements say.

Which one-off giveaways has the developer announced?

The one-off giveaways below were tied to a demo or a partner game, and whether each is still claimable is not confirmed. The table lists ones that are not on our events timeline, with each announcement's title as posted and its date.

The full game launched on March 5, 2025. Whether the two demo rewards required playing the demo before that date is not confirmed: the February 3 post asks for the demo plus one session of the full game after launch, the March 2 post says "everyone who played the demo will receive two exclusive items" and "You must have 30min of playtime in the demo to be eligible for the drop", and the launch post of March 5, 2025 says "(if you have 30mins of playtime in the demo)". None of the three gives a cut-off. The four collaboration posts print no end date either, so their status is not confirmed. The post of June 27, 2026 described further down does not name any of these four.

Seasonal giveaways are not repeated here. The Free Halloween Treat of October 30, 2025, the free Advent and Lunar New Year calendars, the free Ranged Mecha L.A.S.E.R. from the Steam Typing Fest post, and the two Bongo Cat x Indie Demos rounds are dated on the events timeline linked above, with the end date wherever the announcement gives one.

Are there Bongo Cat codes?

We did not find any. On October 9, 2026 we searched the full text of the 63 developer announcements in the game's Steam news feed and the store description for the words a code system would need. Nothing in those texts describes a place to type a code or a code that grants an item.

The same terms return 0 matches in the store description. That is a statement about the sources read, not proof that no code feature exists. The lobby codes in those posts belong to multiplayer lobbies, and nothing in the posts says a lobby code grants an item.

So if a site lists "Bongo Cat codes" for a named hat, treat the list as not confirmed. This page will add a codes table only when a code appears in an official post.

Why were incentivized rewards disabled?

Because of Steam's rules, according to the developer. The post Wild Wonders DLC Release & Summer Sale, posted on June 27, 2026, says: "We had to disable the incentivized rewards (f.e. collab with Nightwater or the wishlist ones) and moved them to owning the full game or removed them entirely, because it was against Steam Guidelines to incentivize this, sorry for that." June 27 is the posting date; the post does not say when the rewards were switched off, and it does not use the word demo.

Nightwater shows the change in one example. On June 16, 2026 the Summer Event post offered "the Nightwater Backpack for wishlisting the game" and "the Nightwater Cat for playing the demo for 5min". On September 18, 2026 the post Nightwater Release & Collab says "Getting the game will also grant you these four Bongo Cat items".

The post does not say which older rewards were moved to ownership and which were removed, so the status of each 2025 collaboration item is not confirmed.

How do you avoid missing a free item?

The announcements repeat three habits.

1. Open the game at least once a month, which is the stated condition for the free pass ticket.
2. Keep the game updated. Giveaway posts carry the line "Don't forget to update your game!", and the Typing Fest item was claimed "by updating your game, following the giftbox and claiming your free Mech!".
3. Claim inside the window. The first Bongo Cat x Indie Demos post ends its offer with "After that you can't get them anymore."

Calendars were more forgiving. The Winter Event post of December 1, 2025 says the free Advent calendar "will be available until December 31st, which means you can also open doors from the past". If a demo reward did not arrive, the Indie Demos post suggested closing the other game "(so Steam syncs your playtime)" and waiting a few minutes.

Can a friend give you hats and skins for free?

Yes, in two ways the announcements name. The Animal Shelter - Charity Event post of November 10, 2025 says "we will re-enable ALL items for trading with friends, so gift your duplicats to your friends!". The trading rule has changed more than once, and the history is on the exchange and trading page.

A friend can also pay the taps for your chest. The June 27, 2026 post says players can open a friend's chests and adds "(it costs you 1000 clicks, for your friend it's free)". The Paw Pass launch post says the pass ticket can be gifted "by using Steam's trading feature".

What is not free in Bongo Cat?

The official text puts a price on several things, and this list is not exhaustive: single supporter items in the Steam Item Store, the DLC packs, the premium Paw Pass lane, the Deluxe Calendar that the Winter Event post offered for purchase next to the free Advent calendar, and the "Lunar New Year Deluxe" that the Year of the Horse Event post of February 16, 2026 offered for purchase "(until March 16th)". The April 13, 2026 post adds items tied to buying another game: "Everyone who buys Tap Tap Loot will also receive 4 exclusive items!". When we loaded the Item Store on October 9, 2026, the US page showed a listing named Paw Pass Token at $4.99, and every other listing shown on that page was $2.50; the developer's announcement calls the pass item a Paw Pass Ticket, and its own store link opens the listing titled Paw Pass Token.
