Bongo Cat Legendary Odds: Chests Needed per Tier

Scope: Official store description re-read 16 October 2026. Probability results assume independent rolls and a constant tier rate.

Key points

  • The store lists Epic at 0.01% and Legendary at 1 in 500000, subject to change.
  • 500000 modelled Legendary rolls give about 63.21% chance of at least one, not a guarantee.
  • Use the calculator for a chest count or the 50%, 90% and 95% thresholds.
  • No per-item odds, exchange completion count or playtime forecast is established.

Your chest-count probability calculator

Model one tier drop per chest with a constant chance and independent rolls. This models the published tier chance, not a specific hat, trades or guaranteed rewards.

With 500,000 chests, the model gives a 63.21% chance of at least one Legendary, and a 36.79% chance of none.

Legendary: 346,574 chests for at least 50%; 1,151,292 for at least 90%; 1,497,865 for at least 95% (model).

Formula: P(at least one) = 1 − (1 − p)n. Target count = ceil(log(1 − target) / log(1 − p)). A long unsuccessful run does not raise the next roll's chance in this model.

Bongo Cat's Steam store page lists Epic at 0.01% and Legendary at 1 in 500000 under "Item drop pool chances", marked "Subject to change". By our arithmetic, assuming one item per chest, that averages 10,000 chests per Epic and 500,000 per Legendary, under the independent-roll model. The rarest single item is not confirmed.

What are the official Epic and Legendary odds?

On October 16, 2026 (UTC) we re-read the game's description through the Steam app details API. Under the heading "Item drop pool chances*:" it prints five lines, the last two being "Epic - 0.01%" and "Legendary - 1 in 500000", followed by the footnote "*Subject to change". The API returns the store description; the calculator uses that dated snapshot. The full tier table, including the Unique tier that cannot drop, is in hats and skins; this page adds a calculator and worked arithmetic.

Two limits apply to everything below. First, the odds are per tier. The store page does not say how a drop picks one item inside a tier, so the chance of one specific Legendary hat is not confirmed. Second, the four percentage lines already add up to exactly 100% (90 + 9.5 + 0.49 + 0.01), which leaves no room for the Legendary line (1 ÷ 500,000 = 0.0002%). How the game fits Legendary into the roll is not stated. The calculator treats each published tier rate separately. The exchange-value illustration below uses the rounded listed weights and is not an exact probability distribution.

How many chests does an Epic or Legendary take on average?

Only the "Official chance" column is official. The other three columns are derived, assuming one item per chest and independent rolls, neither of which the developer has spelled out. Average chests per drop is 1 ÷ chance. Chests for an X% chance of at least one drop is ln(1 − X) ÷ ln(1 − chance), rounded up.

Epic0.01%10,0006,93223,025

The average is easy to misread. After exactly 10,000 chests the chance of having seen at least one Epic is 1 − 0.9999^10,000, about 63.2%, so more than a third of players would still have none. For a Legendary the same 63.2% point sits at 500,000 chests.

Why does an average not guarantee an item?

For a Legendary chance of 1 in 500,000, the geometric model has a mean waiting time of 500,000 trials. That is a mean over repeated hypothetical runs, not a deadline for one player. At that point, the probability of still having no Legendary is approximately 36.79%.

If rolls are independent and the chance remains constant, opening 499,999 unsuccessful chests does not make the next one certain. Its chance remains 1 in 500,000 in the model. A pity mechanic would change that calculation, but no such mechanic is established by the store odds used here.

A worked comparison: Epic and Legendary after 10,000 chests

For Epic, p = 0.0001 and n = 10,000. The formula 1 − (1 − p)^n gives about 63.21%. For Legendary, p = 0.000002 with the same n gives about 1.98%. Those answers concern at least one item in the selected tier, not the number of different hats collected.

The calculator uses log1p and expm1 to avoid numerical loss when probabilities are small. Counts must be whole numbers from zero to one billion. Zero chests gives zero chance; very large probabilities may round to 100.00% without becoming a mathematical guarantee.

Can you calculate the chance of one specific hat?

Not from a tier rate alone. You would also need the rule for choosing an item inside that tier, the eligible item pool for the chest and any relevant event rules. Dividing the tier rate equally among all hats would assume uniform selection without evidence. This calculator therefore stops at tier-level results.

The hats and skins reference separates the documented item sources. The Paw Pass reference covers separately described reward offers. Do not apply ordinary chest rates to a guaranteed-rarity reward without evidence that the same rule applies.

Do exchange trades change the direct-drop result?

An exchange is a separate way of obtaining an item. It does not change the independent direct-drop formula. The exchange and trading reference describes its source history; this calculator does not model the current exchange rule.

An earlier version divided a target's exchange value by average item value and called the result a best-case chest estimate. That is not an expected waiting-time calculation: discrete leftovers, which items you retain and the actual exchange rules matter. We removed those completion estimates and the time forecasts that relied on them.

How should you use the answer?

  1. Choose the tier relevant to the chest you are considering.
  2. Enter a chest count to compare the modelled chance of at least one drop with the chance of none.
  3. Read the 50%, 90% and 95% thresholds as model outputs, not a required number to open or a reason to buy more.
  4. Check whether the current official rate or chest type differs. If so, this model may not apply.

There is no current chest timer verified here, so the calculator does not convert openings into playtime.

The Steam app-details description was re-read on 16 October 2026. The tier odds are source facts; all probability results are our calculations under stated assumptions. The exchange-value and completion-time estimates were removed. Report a changed official rate through Contact with its source and date.
