Orc Problem 3.1: The One

Last reviewed: 11 September 2026 · Newest game update reflected: 2026.08.18.12.05 (published 19 August 2026). Level 3.1 sits in an awkward place. It is the last level most players clear without thinking about it, and it is immediately followed by the level that ends more campaigns than any other. It also carries a constraint achievement that asks you to beat it with a single turret type and nothing else.

The two achievements on this level

Per the Steam unlock data captured 7 September 2026:

AchievementWhat it asksGlobal unlock
The Real War Begins NowSurvive level 3.188.7%
SpecialistSurvive level 3.1 with only one type of tower and no abilities22.5%

Like 1.1, this level carries both a progression marker and a constraint challenge. Unlike 1.1, the progression marker here is already doing real filtering: the survive-the-first-level rate and the survive-3.1 rate are 8.7 percentage points apart, so a slice of the player base stops somewhere in between.

The achievement name is a warning, and the data agrees

"The Real War Begins Now" is the game's own label for surviving this level, and it lands one level before the wall documented on the 3.2 difficulty spike page. Line the progression achievements up and the shape is obvious:

  • Survive 1.1 — 97.4%
  • Survive 3.1 — 88.7%
  • Survive 6.2 — 30.2%

The collapse happens after 3.1, not before it. So the useful way to treat this level is as the last checkpoint where a defence that has never been stress-tested still works. If you are clearing 3.1 comfortably but have never thought about which upgrade branches you bought, the 3.2 page is the one to read next — its whole argument is that the wall is a branch problem, not a placement problem.

Specialist: one type, no abilities, flamethrowers

The wording matters. Specialist allows one type of tower — as many of them as you can afford — where the 1.1 achievement allows exactly one tower. And as with every no-ability challenge, all four click abilities are off the table.

itsuno's guide records this one being done on 3.1 with high-level flamethrowers, which is a genuinely surprising choice given the numbers. The flamethrower has the lowest damage figure on the whole stat table: 0.6 damage per tick, three ticks per second, a 3.5 second burn, no listed penetration and no listed range beyond "short."

A turret with that stat line clearing a level unassisted tells you something the stat sheet cannot. The flamethrower's real output is in two effects the all turrets page lists but never quantifies — a damage amp on burning orcs, and a chance not to consume pierce. On a mixed defence those effects flow into whatever is shooting through the burn. On a flamethrower-only defence they have to flow into other flamethrowers, which means the amp is stacking on itself.

That is the most plausible reading of how it works, and it is a reading, not a measurement.

Why a single type is harder than it sounds

The turret roles page splits every turret into power, support and cleanup, and its central claim is that a defence which fails after full upgrades usually has too much of one job and none of another. Specialist deliberately forces exactly that failure mode: whatever type you pick, you are giving up two of the three jobs.

This is why the recommended answer is a support turret rather than a power one. A wall of cannons is pure power with nothing bunching the wave into it and nothing catching leaks. A wall of flamethrowers is at least a job that compounds — each one extends what the one before it started.

The same logic is why a machine gunner wall is a defensible second choice and why a tesla-only wall is usually not: the tesla's 12-jump chain is a capped resource per shock, and the page's core placement rule is that it belongs behind a damage line that does not exist in a one-type run.

Before you attempt it

Two things make this easier and neither is skill.

Clear 3.1 normally first. You want the Real War Begins Now unlock anyway, and knowing where the orcs walk turns the constrained attempt into a placement puzzle rather than two problems at once — the same order the 6.1 page recommends for the four-type version.

Fund the branch you intend to use. The upgrade grind page records that resources come from every run, won or lost, so failed attempts still pay. itsuno's qualifier for flamethrowers is "high-level," and that qualifier is doing most of the work in his recommendation.

The all achievements page places Specialist second in the no-ability sequence, after the single-turret run on 1.1 and before the elemental run on 4.1.

What we have not confirmed

Neither logged patch on the update history page mentions level 3.1 — the 18 August update touched 3.2's brightness and music, and the 2 August update touched 6.1's geometry, but nothing in either announcement names this level.

We do not have wave composition, enemy counts or map layout for 3.1. We cannot say how high "high-level" flamethrowers need to be, because no source publishes upgrade-tier scaling for any turret. We have not verified that any turret type other than the flamethrower can clear this — the alternatives discussed above are read off the role framework, not reported by a player. And whether the achievement is enforced on 3.1 specifically is not something the game states.
