Race Horses Index, Traits and Shiny Horses Explained

Scope: Index, traits and shiny variants from the official game description; Re-roll Horse! from the developer products API; levels and retiring from the badges API, all on 2026-10-01. Index rewards, trait names and odds do not appear in the game's Roblox listing or store data

Key points

  • The Index launched under the slogan "Collect horses for rewards!"; the developer has not published what the rewards are.
  • The description names three random properties: coat, eye size and traits. Rarity follows the seven egg tiers. Rare traits and shiny variants are described as "ultra-rare 1-in-[X]".
  • Re-roll Horse! (39 Robux) re-rolls a horse's trait; the game shows trait odds in-game, but they are not published outside it.
  • Horses also level up (to at least level 30), win races and can be retired.

The Index in Race Horses is a horse-collecting feature: the game description announces "Index OUT NOW! Collect horses for rewards! 📖". The developer has not said what the rewards are or what counts as a new entry. What is confirmed is how horses differ: seven rarities, random coats, eye sizes and traits, plus ultra-rare traits and shiny variants.

This page sticks to what Gorilla Grafters has published in the game description, the store and the badges, and marks every point where we could not confirm the detail.

What exactly does the developer say about the Index?

Two things, and nothing more:

  • The game's Roblox name became "[INDEX📖] Race Horses".
  • The description's first line reads "Index OUT NOW! Collect horses for rewards! 📖".

So the Index is about collecting horses, and filling it pays out something. We could not confirm whether entries are counted by rarity, by trait, by shiny variant or by coat, how many entries there are, or what the rewards are. We also could not find when it launched: Roblox data does not record name changes, and the developer published no patch note. The fan sites we checked on 1 October 2026 did not cover it either. We will add details here once there is an official source.

What makes two horses different?

The description promises that "no two horses match". It lists what is random:

PropertyWhat the official sources saySource
RaritySeven tiers, Common to Exotic, matching the seven egg tiers; whether an egg can roll another tier is not statedBadges and egg products
Coat"Coats ... are all random"Game description
Eye size"eye size ... all random"Game description
TraitsRandom; some are "ultra-rare 1-in-[X] traits"Game description
Shiny"shiny variants" exist and are hunted like rare traitsGame description
LevelHorses level up; a badge exists for level 30Man's Best Friend badge
WinsCounted per horse; badges for 10 wins with one horseHorsepower, So Long, Partner

The "[X]" is in the official text itself. The developer did not fill in a number, so any 1-in-X figure you see on a fan site did not come from the description.

How do traits and re-rolls work?

Traits are rolled when a horse hatches. If you dislike one, the Re-roll Horse! product (39 Robux) is described as "Not a fan of the trait? Re-roll it! (SEE ODDS FOR TRAITS)". Two things follow from that wording:

  1. A re-roll targets the trait, not the whole horse. Whether coat or eye size change too is not stated.
  2. The game shows trait odds somewhere in its interface. We have not seen that screen, so we do not list trait names or odds.

Our advice: check the odds screen in the game before spending Robux on re-rolls, since a re-roll can land on a worse trait.

Are shiny horses better at racing?

Nothing official says so. The description groups shiny variants with ultra-rare traits as something to "hunt", which reads as a collection goal, and with the Index paying for collecting, that is where shiny horses most clearly matter. On the track, the only official rule is that "better horses earn more", without defining better. The racing guide covers what the race badges reveal.

How do horses grow and leave your stable?

Horses gain XP and levels. The description says caring for them gives "extra XP bonus", Man's Best Friend rewards reaching level 30, and the + 1 Golden Apple product promises "+ 1 Level Up!". Feeding is covered in the care and stable guide.

Horses can also be retired: So Long, Partner asks you to "Retire a horse with 10 or more wins". The badge had been awarded only 2,168 times by 1 October 2026. With storage at 9 horse slots unless you own X3 STORAGE (27), retiring may be how you free up space, though the developer has not said so.

Which horse should you keep?

Our rule of thumb, not an official one:

  • Keep any shiny horse, any horse with a trait the in-game odds screen marks as rare, and your first horse of each rarity until you know how the Index counts entries.
  • Level the horses you race most; levels and wins are tracked per horse.
  • Retire only a horse you no longer race, ideally after it reaches 10 wins for the badge.

Which egg to open next is a price question, answered in eggs and rarities.

What we could not confirm

  • Index rewards, entry rules and entry count.
  • Trait names, the number of traits and every 1-in-X value.
  • Shiny odds, and whether shiny or trait affects race results.
  • Whether retiring is reversible or gives a reward.
